January 6th marked a significant milestone for me, the fourth anniversary of a stroke that dramatically altered my life’s trajectory. It began as an ordinary day. I was up before dawn, laced up my running shoes, and enjoyed a brisk 5k run along the Willamette River. At 68, I was in good shape, unaware of the seismic shift that was just hours away. That run would be my last. Later that day, a hemorrhagic stroke struck without warning, leaving my left side paralyzed. I found myself helpless on the floor, managing only to crawl to the front door, open it, and call for help.

The Unexpected Detour and Path to Recovery

The years following the stroke have been a rollercoaster of challenges and triumphs. The stark reality is that strokes of this nature are often fatal; statistics indicate that up to 65% of individuals do not survive beyond a year, with a grim 50% mortality rate within the first 48 hours. Within six months post-stroke, only a small fraction, around 20%, regain full independence. Despite facing daunting times, I am profoundly grateful to have survived, and crucially, that my cognitive functions remained intact.

My recovery journey has involved extensive periods in rehabilitation centers, working with dedicated occupational and physical therapists. I am indebted to the exceptional doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who have been instrumental in my progress. While I have regained much of the mobility on my left side, some weakness persists in my left leg, preventing me from driving manual transmission cars—a limitation as I cannot reliably operate the clutch. However, daily rehabilitation remains a cornerstone of my life, fueled by hope for continued improvement.

Adding to the complexities of recovery, age has presented its own set of hurdles, including spinal cyst removal, blood clots, and the implantation of a pacemaker and stents. These experiences have underscored a simple truth: aging is not for the faint of heart.

A Stroke of Luck: Redefining Perspective and Gratitude

While the stroke was an unwelcome event, it has profoundly reshaped my perspective, highlighting the unpredictable nature of life. It was a stark reminder that our bodies, seemingly dependable, can turn against us without warning. Reflecting on the past four years, I am overwhelmed by the fragility of existence. Had I been unable to reach my door and call for help, my story would have ended abruptly. I would have missed countless moments with my children, Alexandra and Bradley.

My appreciation for time spent with my children has deepened immeasurably. I cherish the opportunity to continue guiding and supporting them. Alexandra is thriving as a Brand Marketing Specialist at Western Star, a Daimler Truck North America company. Bradley is enjoying his sophomore year at Lincoln High School, with college on the horizon. These relationships, along with the camaraderie of friends and the Sports Car Market (SCM) team, enrich my life immeasurably.

Professionally, I have become a more effective communicator and a more thoughtful business leader. Under the expert guidance of Editor-In-Chief Jeff Sabatini, SCM is thriving with an exceptionally talented team. Producing each issue is a genuine pleasure. In a challenging media landscape where many established magazines are closing, SCM’s readership and advertiser engagement are stronger than ever. Sports Car Market remains a prominent presence on newsstands, a testament to its enduring appeal in the car magazine market. We are deeply grateful for the continued loyalty and support of our members and advertisers over the past 35 years.

Shifting Gears: Exploring New Avenues in the Car Market

My passion for automobiles remains undiminished. In fact, it has led me to explore new facets of the car market, specifically two-pedal sports cars. Each car I experience offers fresh learning opportunities and enjoyment. A highlight of recent years has been my involvement with the Chattanooga Motorcar Festival and its support for the Neuroscience Center at CHI Memorial and the NeuroScience Innovation Foundation. As a guest each year, I have shared my stroke recovery journey. Dr. Thomas Devlin, director of the CHI Memorial Stroke and Neuroscience Center, has shown particular interest in my progress, providing valuable information and encouragement.

Looking ahead, the road stretches on. I eagerly anticipate participating in the SCM 1000 in June, driving a classic German car. I look forward to experiencing the scenic beauty of eastern Washington and engaging in stimulating conversations about the current car market with fellow enthusiasts each evening.

The past four years have presented the most significant challenges of my life. Yet, here I am, still engaged in my life’s work. My rehabilitation is an ongoing commitment, as is sharing my reflections with you. Let us embrace each moment, recognizing its preciousness. We must strive forward with determination, navigating the uncertainties of the future that unfolds with every turn. Thank you for being part of this journey.
