Exotic Car Rental Las Vegas: Understanding Extended Protection Insurance

Renting an exotic car in Las Vegas is a thrilling experience. However, understanding your insurance coverage is crucial. This article outlines the Extended Protection (EP) insurance offered for exotic car rentals, focusing on liability and uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage.

Extended Protection (EP) Explained

EP provides supplemental liability protection for rentals secured with this option. It builds upon the state-required minimum liability coverage (Primary Protection), extending the combined single limit for bodily injury and property damage to $1 million per accident. This protects you against financial responsibility for damages to others in an accident.

UM/UIM Coverage: Protection Against the Uninsured

UM/UIM coverage protects you if you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver. EP provides this coverage, supplementing the state-mandated minimums. The coverage limit difference between the basic and $100,000 per accident is covered through an excess liability policy. Higher limits apply in New York ($100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident) and Hawaii ($1,000,000 combined single limit) or as required by state law, whichever is greater. Importantly, the renter and owner reject any additional UM/UIM coverage beyond these limits where permitted by law.

Geographic and Other Coverage Limitations

EP, including UM/UIM benefits, only applies when the renter or an authorized additional driver operates the vehicle within the United States and Canada. Coverage is excluded in Mexico.

Important Exclusions

Several crucial exclusions apply to EP coverage. These include injuries to the renter or authorized drivers and their immediate family members residing in the same household, damage to the rental vehicle itself, fines and penalties, damages caused intentionally, and any liabilities covered under worker’s compensation or similar laws.

UM/UIM Benefit Limits

Note that any UM/UIM benefits paid are factored into the $1 million combined single limit of the EP coverage. These payments do not increase the overall $1 million limit.
