The vast majority of Los Angeles commuters drive alone, leading to congested roads and increased emissions. A unique solution has arrived in the form of the SOLO, a One Seater Car designed for solo travel. This innovative electric vehicle aims to alleviate traffic woes and promote a more sustainable commute.
The SOLO: A Single-Occupant Solution for Urban Driving
The SOLO, manufactured by Vancouver-based ElectraMeccanica, is a three-wheeled, all-electric one seater car specifically designed for single-occupant travel. With a top speed of 80 mph and a 100-mile range per charge, it’s geared towards navigating the notorious Los Angeles traffic. Los Angeles is the initial launch market for the SOLO, with plans for nationwide expansion within two years.
The SOLO’s compact size, occupying just a quarter of the space of a typical SUV, allows for easier maneuvering and parking in crowded urban environments. While it resembles a traditional car from the front, its rear tapers to a single wheel, giving it a distinctive appearance.
SOLO: Features and Driving Experience
Classified as a fully enclosed motorcycle in California, the SOLO operates like a car, featuring foot pedals, a steering wheel (centered due to the single seat), and two doors. A standard driver’s license is sufficient to operate the vehicle. Despite its compact size, the SOLO offers comfortable amenities including air conditioning, heated seats, a stereo, Bluetooth, a backup camera, and even a trunk.
Safety features include a seatbelt, roll bar, triple side impact protection, and torque-limited stability control. While not subject to the same crash testing as traditional passenger vehicles, the SOLO incorporates these enhancements to prioritize driver safety. On-road testing reveals a surprisingly spacious and comfortable interior. While acceleration isn’t as brisk as some electric vehicles, the SOLO offers a smooth ride and impressive turning radius.
Affordability and Availability of the SOLO One Seater
Priced at $18,500, the SOLO is a more affordable option compared to mainstream electric vehicles. It qualifies for a $750 rebate through the California Clean Vehicle Rebate Project. Sales are conducted online and through shopping mall kiosks, currently showcased at Westfield Century City and soon to be available at Westfield Fashion Square.
ElectraMeccanica’s Vision for the Future of Urban Mobility
ElectraMeccanica, with roots dating back to a 1960s Italian replica Porsche manufacturer, envisions the SOLO as a solution to growing urban traffic and environmental concerns. The company plans to establish a North American assembly facility within the next two years.
California’s push for electric vehicles, with a mandate for all new passenger vehicle sales to be electric by 2035, aligns with ElectraMeccanica’s vision. The first SOLO deliveries to pre-order customers are expected before the end of the year. The SOLO represents a potential shift in urban commuting, offering a practical and sustainable solution for solo drivers.
