Horacio Pagani himself explains, “Today’s racing cars are focused exclusively on aerodynamics and are largely the product of the wind tunnel. In the 60s and 70s, however, the cars were very fast, certainly dangerous, but beautiful. Prototype sports cars like the Ferrari P4 or the Ford GT40, or the Le Mans cars, had extremely attractive lines, which are still a huge source of inspiration for our cars today. The Porsche 917 is my favourite, with its romantic yet bold shape, which gives the impression of a very fast car. It is beautiful, elegant and timeless. From this desire for freedom, and from the experience of the Zonda R and the cars of the past, came the idea of the Huayra R, like a breath of fresh air.

Foremost among these was the development of the most powerful naturally aspirated internal combustion engine in the Atelier’s history.

The Pagani V12-R – the beating heart of the Huayra R – is a 12-cylinder, 6-liter, naturally aspirated racing engine. Designed from the ground up in collaboration with HWA AG, it was specifically tailored to meet Pagani’s demanding requirements: equipping their new creation with the lightest, most potent, and efficient track-ready V12 ever built. This ambitious goal arose from the fervent desire of Pagani’s discerning clientele, who yearned for an incredibly powerful, high-revving, naturally aspirated V12 for their ultimate track machine.

For the engineers at HWA AG and Pagani, achieving this meant not just focusing on raw power, but equally prioritizing lightness. This challenge was embraced with unwavering dedication, and after over two years of intensive design and development, the formidable Pagani V12-R tipped the scales at a mere 198 kg (436 lbs), placing it at the pinnacle of its class.

Solidly mounted to the central monocoque, where it acts as a structural element supporting the transmission system and chrome-molybdenum alloy steel subframes, the new engine is exceptionally efficient and user-friendly, with service intervals extended to every 10,000 km.

Precision Shifting: The Transmission System

The Huayra R, a true Pagani car, features cutting-edge components, including a brand-new six-speed sequential gearbox. This transmission, developed in tandem with the Huayra R’s engine in collaboration with HWA AG, completes a bespoke powertrain package. Driven by a 3 sintered metal disc racing clutch, the new non-synchronized dog ring gearbox achieves an exceptional 95% friction efficiency, providing maximum shift precision, lightning-fast shift times, and a remarkably low total weight of just 80 kg (176 lb). Securely integrated with both the monocoque and the engine, it contributes significantly to the chassis’ overall rigidity and withstands immense dynamic loads. The complete transmission system is structurally designed to integrate with the entire suspension unit through dedicated attachment points, maximizing the car’s architectural efficiency.

The Roar of Performance: The Exhaust System

Meticulous acoustic and technical planning, coupled with extensive research into materials, geometries, and sound design, culminated in the new exhaust system specifically engineered for the Huayra R, a definitive Pagani car. This system ensures rapid and efficient evacuation of exhaust gases, enabling the Pagani V12-R to unleash its full power while minimizing back pressure. Crafted from Inconel 625/718 alloy, with tube walls a mere third of the thickness of those used in conventional road cars, and coated in ceramic for engine bay protection and enhanced heat dissipation, the entire system is exceptionally lightweight. It’s designed not only to maximize aerodynamic performance but also to deliver an unprecedented acoustic experience to the Huayra R’s occupants. The soundtrack of this racing thoroughbred is pure emotion, thanks to the unique manifold and tailpipe design, featuring equal-length exhaust pipes for all twelve cylinders, allowing the V12-R to roar with the ferocity of a classic F1 engine. The car is also equipped with mufflers that can be fitted as needed, ensuring noise emissions remain within the FIA limit of 110 decibels for noise-restricted tracks.

Chassis and Materials: Lightness and Strength

The Huayra R’s monocoque chassis is the result of dedicated development, meticulously engineered to provide occupants with the immersive driving experience of a true racing car. HWA’s extensive expertise in fine-tuning and producing racing cars and components, combined with Pagani Automobili’s 30 years of experience in advanced composite materials, enabled the application of structural principles and innovative engineering solutions from motorsport to the Huayra R chassis, resulting in a safe structure optimized for track use.

Manufactured using the Atelier’s latest composite technologies, including Carbo-Titanium HP62-G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62, the new monocoque fully integrates the seats, providing maximum protection alongside specific shock-absorption side structures and a roll-bar, while maintaining easy cockpit access. The front frames, constructed from chrome-molybdenum alloy steel, benefit from the development and crash test experience gained during the Huayra project, but are specifically designed for track applications. The rear frame, working in conjunction with the powertrain, forms an integrated structure with the monocoque, enhancing the chassis’ mechanical properties, resulting in a 51% increase in flexural rigidity and a 16% increase in torsional rigidity compared to the road-going Huayra.

The combination of innovative structural principles and materials purpose-developed for the Huayra R design, alongside the resulting enhancement of the structure’s mechanical properties, allows this exceptional Pagani car to achieve a dry weight of just 1,050 kg.

Uncompromising Safety: Protection at the Forefront

For Pagani Automobili, the exhilaration of performance is intrinsically linked to a secure environment offering maximum occupant protection. This is a core principle, never compromised and fundamental to every project undertaken by the Atelier. Careful design and meticulous material research, bodywork engineering, and roll bar structure development were central to the Huayra R’s creation. The aim was not only to deliver the most thrilling track driving experience but, above all, a safe Pagani car that meets the most stringent FIA requirements for GT vehicles.

The heavy-duty safety cage integrated into the central monocoque incorporates specialized composite material absorption structures at the front, sides, and rear. These are specifically designed to dissipate kinetic energy in the event of impacts or rollovers. Inside the cabin, an automatic fire extinguishing system is activated in case of fire. The seats, fully integrated into the carbon monocoque, are equipped with six-point safety belts and covered in Nomex flame retardant material. FIA-approved Ener-Core EC 50 foam padding ensures an optimal driving position, perfectly conforming to the occupants’ body shape, while carbon fiber headrests feature dedicated lateral protection.

Aerodynamic Artistry: Form Follows Function

For Pagani Automobili, crafting complex, technologically advanced, and innovative cars demands not only brilliant engineers but also true artists. For the skilled artisans involved in the Huayra R’s development, this mission entailed intense study and research to seamlessly merge technical and performance aspects with the utmost formal elegance. Every line and surface of the Huayra R, a masterpiece Pagani car, is meticulously sculpted to generate maximum aerodynamic load. The initial development target was 1000 kg of downforce at 320 km/h (2204 lb at 199 mph), with ground clearance optimized for peak aerodynamic performance while ensuring predictable and safe handling in all conditions. This ambitious goal was rapidly achieved, with excellent results from the initial aerodynamic tests. The car demonstrated exceptional stability and balance, maintaining the targeted 46%-54% downforce distribution across the entire speed range, while exhibiting reduced sensitivity to ground clearance variations.

This remarkable outcome, while impressive, wasn’t enough to fully satisfy Horacio Pagani’s team, who sought an even more captivating and sinuous aesthetic treatment for the Huayra R; a design even more deeply rooted in emotion. Further research into the car’s design and stylistic elements led to a surprising and unexpected discovery: as the car’s aesthetics evolved, performance and aerodynamic efficiency improved, highlighting the crucial role of beauty – interpreted as the perfect harmony of form and function – in every facet of design.

Contributing to the car’s dependable performance are two new side air intakes at the front. These maximize cooling efficiency for the front braking system while channeling outgoing airflow towards the car’s sides, minimizing turbulence and enhancing downforce generation. Ensuring adequate cooling for the potent engine required relentless work on the radiator and internal fluid dynamics. New wing profiles were incorporated on the front bonnet to accelerate air extraction and enhance front-end stability. New air vents above the wheel arches and generous side outlets further optimize airflow channeling to the rear aerodynamic appendages.

The new roof scoop, with its integrated center fin, guarantees maximum intake efficiency for the Pagani V12-R. The flat underbody, in conjunction with the rear diffuser and the distinctive rear wing, are instrumental in generating maximum downforce.

Suspension Mastery: Precision and Control

The sophistication of Pagani car suspension systems has always been a source of pride for the Atelier. The culmination of over 30 years of research and development, this technical and technological prowess, constantly refined through experimentation, found a crucial proving ground in the Zonda R. This led to the development of highly innovative technical solutions that would subsequently be implemented in the Huayra Coupé. Similarly, the new kinematics and sophisticated geometry of the suspension unit specifically developed for the Huayra R, the ultimate Pagani car, are the product of one of the most intensive design and experimental phases ever undertaken by the Atelier, and represent the future of Pagani Automobili on the track.

Featuring suspension made of forged aluminum alloy, independent double wishbones with helical springs, and electronically controlled active shock absorbers, the entire configuration of the new system, with rigid mounting points, not only effectively transfers the immense power and torque of the Pagani V12-R to the tarmac but also provides unprecedented driving precision. The Huayra R’s advanced and refined elasto-kinematics allow for greater camber recovery and optimized dynamic bump steer correction, ensuring ideal grip for slick tires in every situation and empowering drivers to attack challenging corners like Eau Rouge without losing a millisecond.

Interconnected with the active aerodynamic system, the active suspension ensures the Huayra R responds optimally in all conditions, achieving perfect balance during corner entry and exit, and maximum stability under braking, for precise and consistently predictable handling.

Braking Prowess: Stopping Power Redefined

Pagani Automobili and Brembo share a long-standing partnership, consistently focused on equipping Pagani hypercars with cutting-edge braking systems to ensure peak performance, seamlessly integrated design, safety, and exceptional lightness. The Huayra R, the ultimate Pagani car, boasts world-class braking power, thanks to brand-new CCM-R self-ventilated carbon-ceramic discs coupled with racing pads. Specifically developed to enable the new car to utilize the best available technology, the new CCM-Rs offer significant advantages in thermal conductivity and maximum braking power, characteristic of competition-grade carbon. These attributes enable greater rigidity and lower operating temperatures under extreme track use, while simultaneously extending the system’s lifespan.

Tires and Wheels: Grip and Agility

Pirelli, with its unparalleled motorsport experience, participation in international GT3 and single-make championships, and a glorious racing heritage rooted in the historic victory at the inaugural F1 race at Silverstone in May 1950, has dedicated 110 years to developing the pinnacle of racing tire technology to elevate the performance of the world’s finest sports cars. The extensive research and development collaboration with Pagani Automobili resulted in a slick version of the P Zero tires, offering maximum precision and a sense of complete control, even for non-professional drivers, ensuring exceptional braking performance and optimal traction.

Utilizing standard racing-derived sizes to ensure cost-effectiveness and availability for customers, this P Zero slick version will benefit from all future Pirelli motorsport tire developments, seamlessly adaptable to the car. Available in Dry and Wet versions, specifically designed to allow the Huayra R, the ultimate Pagani car, to conquer the tarmac in all conditions, Pirelli’s new tire is engineered to provide the grip necessary for pinpoint precision through every corner.

The monolithic rims, custom-designed in partnership with APP Tech and forged from aluminum alloy, were engineered to achieve maximum lightness in 19-inch diameter.
