The Audi RS4, particularly the B7 generation, is a legendary car known for its driving dynamics and powerful V8 engine. However, its in-car technology can feel dated compared to modern standards. This article explores upgrading an Rs4 Car with a Kenwood DMX7017DABS head unit for Apple CarPlay integration, enhancing the driving experience with modern conveniences.
While the B7 RS4’s original RNS-E system was impressive for its time, featuring navigation, MP3 playback, and a Bose sound system, technology has significantly advanced. Experiencing newer in-car entertainment systems highlighted the desire for Apple CarPlay in the RS4 car. CarPlay offers seamless integration with iPhones, enabling access to up-to-date navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze, music streaming via Spotify, and hands-free calling and messaging using Siri.
The Kenwood DMX7017DABS was chosen for its CarPlay functionality, DAB radio, and minimal button layout. The installation process involved using a Connects2 wiring harness to integrate the Kenwood unit with the existing Bose system. A minor challenge arose due to the RNS-E system’s CAN bus communication, requiring a switched live connection for the Kenwood unit to power on and off. This was resolved by tapping into a suitable feed in the interior fusebox.
Additionally, a Kenwood DRV-N520 dash cam was installed, providing parking incident detection and integration with the head unit for viewing footage. The compact size of the camera allowed for discreet placement behind the rearview mirror. Plans for future upgrades include installing Kenwood KSC-SW11 active subwoofers to enhance the bass response.
The transformation of the RS4 car’s interior with the Kenwood CarPlay system is significant. The touchscreen interface is far more intuitive than the original RNS-E controls. The ability to use modern navigation apps and voice commands significantly improves the daily driving experience.
