Sf Animal Care And Control (ACC) is San Francisco’s sole open-admission animal shelter. As a municipal agency, ACC provides shelter, care, and medical treatment for a wide range of animals including domestic, stray, lost, abandoned, sick, injured, surrendered, wild, and exotic animals.
The new ACC headquarters adheres to modern animal health and welfare standards, providing a safe, sanitary, and humane environment. Specialized ventilation, room finishes, acoustics, and cleaning systems mitigate disease, control noise and odors, enhance cleaning protocols, and ultimately improve the welfare and adoptability of the animals. The facility also includes improved educational and training spaces for the public, staff, and the numerous volunteers who contribute over 27,000 hours annually.
Designed with seismic safety in mind, the building can maintain emergency operations following a major earthquake, even with temporary power and water outages. This ensures the continued safety and care of San Francisco’s animals and provides peace of mind for their owners.
The new headquarters involved the adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of the historic Market Street Railway Company powerhouse, originally constructed in 1893 and expanded in 1902. While preserving the original exterior, the interior has been modernized with cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art amenities to better serve San Francisco’s animal community for years to come. The project seamlessly blends historical architecture with 21st-century functionality.
